Our club has lost a long-time member who exemplified Service Above Self.
Beverly Hinders Trost passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City Iowa on Saturday, September 30 at 11:00AM with inurnment at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City following the service. Pastor Russ Leeper will preside. Friends and family are invited to gather to visit at the church for an hour prior to the service and to stay following the service for a simple luncheon.
Beverly was born in Charles City, Iowa on May 26, 1939, the eldest daughter of Forrest and Mabel (Lambert) Hinders. Her sister, JoAnn Carrie Knowlton joined the family two years later. Beverly grew up in a farming family, learning to appreciate nature, honest work and true friendship. She attended various country schools in Bremer and Chickasaw Counties and graduated from Nashua High School with the class of 1957. She continued her education at UNI with a BA degree in secondary education. Bev married Gail Trost and taught at Hudson High School from 1964-1968. Bev and Gail’s son, Timothy Lee, was born in 1960, followed by Michael Forrest in 1963. Bev chose to further her education by earning a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and transitioned into administration, spending 30 years at AEA 7, now known as Central Rivers AEA. She served as the Director of Media Services. She enjoyed 23 years of retirement, caring for her mother, Mabel Hinders.
Bev loved to travel and took many international trips. She visited New Zealand, Venice, Egypt and enjoyed numerous trips to England where she especially blossomed as she visited and researched gardens. Her love of the written word is particularly evident when you witness the plethora of books which overwhelm her home. Bev’s generosity benefited her family members throughout her life and she was an active and vocal advocate of causes for which she had tremendous passion: democratic ideals, literacy and equal rights for all. She treasured serving her community as a member of the Waterloo Rotary Club for nearly 32 years and in turn was given an honorary membership, a rare distinction and one of only five current honorary members.
Beverly was predeceased by her parents and former spouse. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Tim of Charles City and Michael of Waterloo; her sister JoAnn and brother-in-law, Don, of Charles City; niece Kirsten (Joe) Field of Charles City and Jessica (Steve) of Cedar Rapids and several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Beverly Hinders Trost Revocable Trust (Care of Veridian Credit Union) or to the Cedar Valley Hospice.
