Club’s Foundation
Giving Nears Goal

Club members have done an excellent job of supporting the Rotary Foundation this year. With three months left in the year, we’re already at 91 percent of the goal set by President Art.

Club members have given $10,416 to the annual programs fund or $56 per member. Our giving ranks us third in the district behind Cedar Rapids ($17,467) and Cedar Rapids Daybreak ($16,749.)

Cedar Rapids had 111 more members at the start of the year so their per capita giving is only slightly higher than our club’s. But Daybreak with 111 members is at $151 per member.

It’s not too late to make your gift this year; for details contact Kathy Braun or Kelli.

Wine Tasting Tickets
Are a Hot Item

The good news is that club members have bought 150 tickets for the May 14 “Cheers to You Cedar Valley” wine tasting event. This is the club’s primary fund raiser for the year.

But more tickets are still available, so please don’t slow down your sales effort. Three local non profits are counting on us to help close their budget needs.

Tickets are $35 per person and are available from Beth Lee or Kelli.

No Meeting Next Week

Next week’s meeting on May 5 has been cancelled so that members can attend the Friday noon session of the district conference in Waverly with our club paying for the meal.

Keynote speaker at the May 2 luncheon will be Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard. Pollard’s first year and a half at Iowa State has seen him hire new coaches for football, wrestling and men’s basketball along with a remodeling of Cyclone Stadium.

If you are interested in attending, please notify Kelli so she can arrange for your ticket. All sessions will be held at Wartburg College. Full details on the conference are on the internet at http://www.waverlyrotary.org/.

April Birthday
Table is Today

Steve Showers will entertain us today with details of the lives of our April babies. Don’t miss the fun.

Rotarians Work Another Miracle in Nicaragua

On our trip to Nicaragua last fall we met a little boy that Rotarian Frank Huezo found in Leon, Nicaragua.

Isaac had legs that were so badly deformed and bowed that he walked on the outside of booth feet rather than the bottoms. Frank has worked for about three years to find a way to get Isaac to the US for treatment and surgery if possible. Rotarian Dennis Adams from Texas contacted the Houston Shiners’

Children's Hospital and they agreed to treat Isaac for free. In March Frank went to Nicaragua and brought Isaac and his mother to Houston. He began examinations on March 25; on the 28th he was examined in the Rickets Clinic and it was decided to proceed with Rickets treatments; on the 31st he was checked out at the genetics clinic.

On April 4 Isaac had arthroscopic surgery on both legs; eight plates were placed in his legs where they are expected to begin straightening his legs over the next year. He also received the rickets injections which should stimulate faster growth in the bones.

Five days later he left the hospital. He and his mom are staying with another Houston Rotarian, Tom Juarez, during his follow up visits to the hospital. At his first check-up after only two weeks, he told the doctors that his right leg had already begun to straighten. They were surprised to find that this was true. He went back for another check-up last Wednesday and thenhe visits the Rickets clinic on April 29 to evaluate his response to that treatment.

Isaac’s story Illustrates how the original shoebox mission has morphed into something much larger and why our Nicaragua efforts become so meaningful to those who make the trip south.
