Club Hands Out
Three Scholarships

The three winners of the Fred Adams Scholarships were introduced last week and presented with certificates showing that they will each receive a $1,000 scholarship credit from our club. The three are:

Willie Timm, a student at Hawkeye Community College.

Andrew Maske, a student at the Allen College; and

Dajana Sabic, student at the University of Northern Iowa.

Money for the awards comes from a fund in the Community Foundation created to remember 70-year member Fred Adams and from money collected monthly at the birthday table. Initially the awards were $600 each, but the fund has grown and so have the scholarships.

Additional gifts would allow the foundation to expand its support of youth activities in the Cedar Valley. To donate, send your check to the Community Foundation at PO Box 1176 in Waterloo and make it payable to the Rotary Youth Activity Fund/Fred Adams Endowment Fund.

Rotary Tabloid
Hits the Street

A sixteen-page tabloid celebrating Rotary in Iowa will be inserted in 7,000 copies of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier Monday as part of a statewide-effort to raise visibility of the world’s oldest service club. A secondary goal is to make it easier to recruit new members to all 165 clubs in the state.

Our club and Cedar Falls were among 20 in our district to purchase the tab which was produced by Rotarian Bill Tubbs of Eldridge, Iowa. Tubbs publishes the North Scott newspaper and is the North American coordinator of Rotary’s public image program. Last year the same fund paid for a number of billboards in Iowa including several in Waterloo.

Three stories in the tab refer to our club. There is a feature story on the shoebox effort, another on polio with a side bar on member Doug Oberman and a third on Cedar Falls native Rachel Lyle whom our club nominated for a foundation ambassadorial scholarship five years ago

With the newspaper insert raising awareness and the wine tasting event ten days away, this is a great time to invite a friend

or business associate to visit our club and to consider membership. Few service clubs in Iowa can match our list of accomplishments or our fellowship

Remember how you felt when someone asked you to join?

It’s a Small World

One of incoming Rotary President Dong Kurn Lee’s university classmates was Ban Ki-Moon who is now Secretary General of the United Nations. The two good friends, who are natives of Korea, are now working together on several initiatives in the area of children’s health and polio eradication. Recently Lee invited his friend to visit Rotary headquarters in Evanston.

Rotary Fellowships- -
A Little Know Program

Rotary was founded 102 years ago on the premise of fellowship and that concept has exploded in recent years with more than 100 unique groups from vocations to avocations, sports to hobbies and professional interests.

There are even groups for doll lovers and Rotarians who collect license plates. We believe that our club has never had a member of a Rotary Fellowship.

Here’s some facts which may cause you to join a fellowship:
