Meeting Mondays at 12:00 Noon
Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center
W 4th & Commercial Streets
Downtown Waterloo

April 18, 2005

It's a road trip today to Valley Lutheran High School located at the corner of Rownd Street and Greenhill Road in Cedar Falls. It opened for classes in September, 2004.

The students will present a drama program for us and we'll meet the leadership team and faculty.

And tours will be available both before and after the program.

Club Welcomes Five New Members

The membership campaign ended with bang March 31 when the Board approved five new members. They are, along with their sponsor:

Dr. Steven F. Schmit. Iowa State University, University Extension, Black Hawk County Extension, proposed by Allen Ricks.

Jennifer Lightbody, Peoples Community Health Clinic, proposed by Karen Grode.

Ross Barbatti, Net Worth Advisors, proposed by Karen Grode.

Bill McIntee, Financial Decisions Group, proposed by John Bunge.

Ryan Risetter, Farmers State Bank, proposed by Todd McGregor.

Not only did Karen Grode chair the campaign, but she also brought in two members herself. Thanks, Karen.

And in case you wondered, Steve Schmitt is already a member, and our president. The new Steve spells his last name differently.

What's The Deal with
The $10 Assessment?

Your club's Board voted two weeks ago to impose a $10 per member assessment to cover the cost of prizes involved in the hole in one project.

The assessment replaces the "Chuck your Change" approach used in each of the last three years. So it will have little effect on those who show up every week and pitch in. Is there a message there?

Housing Needed for
Exchange Students

Youth exchange students from across the district will be in Waterloo April 22 and 23 to attend the district conference and that committee is looking for members who will be willing to house one or more of them.

If you would be willing to help, please call Kevin McCrindle (291-7242) or Kelli McCarthy at the Rotary office (234-1440) and tell him/her if you prefer boys or girls and how many you have room for.

The students will spend both days at the conference; you may be asked to transport them to and from the convention center and to furnish a breakfast.

Luncheon at District Conference
To Be Paid by our Club

The opening luncheon at the district conference, April 22, will replace our normal weekly meeting on the following Monday, April 25. So your board as agreed to pay for your meal if you attend the meeting on the 22nd. And what a meeting it figures to be.

The price of the luncheon include attendance at a play starting at 10:45 AM put on by professional actors from Rotary district 5960 in Minnesota depicting the history of Rotary over it's 100 years. We hear that this play, a musical, is chock full of fast-paced humor and energy.

The luncheon features keynote speaker Michael Kinsley from the Rocky Mountain Institute in Colorado. His topic will involve business and the environment.

Rotary Vice President Mike McCullough of Detroit will be present to make a very special presentation to one member of the district. Mike has been to Nicaragua twice and has made the children of the dump the centennial project for the two Rotary zones in the Midwest.

After the luncheon Mike and Larry Wright, also from Detroit, will premiere a multi-media show about Rotary's work in Chinandega. It will be a real production. The program has been prepared for circulation to over 200 locations worldwide. You will see it first here.

Or you can opt to tour the John Deere vehicle assembly facility with the group.

But to take advantage of the "free lunch," you must register in advance, either at the badge table or by calling the offce.
